Crashing after two full days of book-buying ✌🏼

This weekend’s annual charity book sale in South Carolina is where we source most of our shop’s great reads each year. The “Really Good, Really Big, Really Cheap Book Sale” supports the Greenville Literacy Association. Many thanks to Amanda, Sarah, Sarah (yes, two Sarahs!), and Jono for their help with selecting, to Fleur for looking after our kiddos, and to all the fantastic volunteers at the event. It will be a few weeks before these start showing up on the shelves, but look out Waxhaw, lots of fresh reads are on their way!

Back in 2018 I started a reading tradition—in addition to whatever else I’m reading that year, I add in books about/from/set in on one country or geographic region. 🌎

Some years I’ve only gotten around to one or two of these—other years I’ve read lots from history and biography to fiction and travelogues.

No matter the results, I’ve found it to be a great way to broaden my reading horizons!

This month’s read is a classic Chinese novel centering on the rise and fall of the aristocratic Jia family during the Qing Dynasty. The series is considered one of China’s four great classical novels chronicling 18th-century Chinese life. Whether you finished the novel or only just started it, we’d love to have you join for discussion on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:30 pm at the Mule Barn Mercantile!

This interesting book about the Eastern origins of tea and the customs of the ancient tea ceremony is as much philosophy of art as history. The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzo will be worth the read! You can purchase a copy through our bookshop.org page, link in bio. It’s a short read at only 128 pages—that will give our readers time to get a start on March’s extra long read, The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at Saturday’s Autumn Treasures Festival! Our first year participating was a great success—but it wouldn’t have been possible without a LOT of help from family and friends. For all their help with childcare, preparation, lending event supplies, building custom bookmark displays, loading, unloading, setup, loading, and unloading again—so many thanks to Jono, Karen, Kimber, Jan, Keri, Kevin, Landon, Rowan, Deven, Don, and Amanda!! Thanks also to all the great volunteers and organisers!
